12 style hacks to always look polished: a peek inside a professional stylist kit

As a professional stylist working behind the scenes, I have seen every kind of fashion emergency possible. With that, I have amassed tons of tips, tricks, and fixes to cure these little mishaps. Below are 12 hacks straight from my stylist kit to help put your best fashion foot forward and always look polished.

Hack #1: Use a Steamer For A Wrinkle Free Outfit

The #1 way to look put together and polished is for your garments to be clean and wrinkle free. Hands Down. Except, I hate ironing. Anyone else? That’s where a steamer comes in and saves the day. Steamers are effortless to operate and work just as well, or even better than ironing.

Hack #2: Grab the Double-Sided Tape

If you ask any stylist what is the most used item in their arsenal 99.9% will say double-sided tape. This little miracle item does it all. Its many uses include closing button gaps, keeping bra straps in place, and holding up hems.

If you want to look polished, you will need double-stick tape.

In the last several years multiple brands have put out their version of double-sided fashion tape. But I still love Topstick, the tried and true original. Topstick’s original use was toupee tape, and this stuff HOLDS like no other while still being safe to put on the skin.

Hack #3: Leather Hole Punch for Belts & Shoes

I LOVE this little tool. So much so that I’ve already mentioned it. It has saved sooo many accessories. Ever have a belt that needed an extra hole? What about a pocketbook strap or a shoe? Yep, me too!

If you want to look polished, our accessories and clothes must fit. Plain and simple.

So, if your belt is too big or a shoe too small, grab this style-saving tool.

Hack #4: Hair & Make Up Pop Over

You did your hair. Your makeup is on point. Now it’s time to get dressed, but you planned to wear a knit dress. Ooops! Use this clever cover-up to keep your hair and makeup intact, as well as prevent getting any stains on your clothes.

Hack #5: Sweater Shaver for Pilling Knits

Keep your sweaters and your knits looking brand new with this convenient gadget. Those little pilling balls that we get around the arms and legs of our knits are tell-tale signs of wear and tear. Keep them at bay and continue to look polished with the use of this tool.

Just be careful not to go overboard because it might tear the fabric. Be sure to test out on a small area first, and use it with a light hand.

Hack #6: Tide To Go to Prevent Stains

This little tube has answered my SOS wardrobe calls for years, and I always carry one with me! If you are ever on a walk and spill coffee on your shirt or at dinner and spill wine on your dress, this miracle pen will work wonders. Seriously. You need a stash of these.

Hack #7: Sewing Kit For Reattaching Buttons & Fixing Hems

Missing buttons and undone hems are a sure-fire way to ruin any look. With knowledge of a couple of basic stitches and a simple sewing kit, you can easily keep them at bay.

Hack #8: Sleeve Elastics to Keep Your Zhushed Up Sleeves in Place

If you like to push or roll up your sleeves, then you need sleeve elastics in your life. With these beauties, you can zhush to your heart’s content, as well as KEEP IT IN PLACE. It will keep you from fidgeting and readjusting all day. It can even be styled to be invisible.

Just make sure they are not too tight. No matter what is said, fashion is not pain, and we DO NOT want to cut off our circulation.

Hack #9: Lint Brush for Pet Hair, Dust, &. Lint

So, we’ve already established that in order to look polished,  clothes should be clean and well kept. But that can’t happen if your clothes are full of pet hair and lint. Having a reusable lint brush on hand ensures a tidy and lint-free polished look.

Hack #10: Leather & Suede Protector for Accessories & Shoes

Clothing must be well cared for in order to keep it looking so fresh and so clean. (I dare you to not hum OutKast right now) Moreso if the clothing in question is susceptible to the elements. Nothing ruins a sweet moto jacket quicker than getting caught in a downpour. Besides a big umbrella, using a spray protector on your coats, shoes, and accessories is the best way to safeguard your items and keep your look polished.

Be sure to follow the directions carefully and test for colorfastness prior to using.

Hack #11: Boob Tape For Backless Dresses and Tops

I LOVE the look of a backless dress but HATE trying to find the right bra to work with it. Primarily because most backless bras make big promises that might hold up for some, but not many. That’s where this sweet hack comes in. Just tape your ladies up with this product! This takes a little practice to get the placement right, but it’s not hard to master once you do. It holds you in place, as well as uplifts, and gives you no visible bra lines.

It doesn’t hurt either. But, if you’re sensitive, PLEASE TEST IT OUT FIRST on a small patch of skin for a few hours and use oil to remove it. In addition, you can wear nipple covers, which brings me to hack #12.

Hack #12: Nipple Covers For When You Want to Go Braless

As mentioned in the previous hack, use nipple covers underneath boob tape for extra protection. But they can also be worn on their own for when you want to go braless but remain somewhat modest. If quanintine has taught us anything about fashion, we learned comfort dressing is rad and we don’t always have to annoyingly hoist up our ladies.

And there you have it! 12 style hacks to always look polished straight from my stylist kit. Hopefully these easy little fixes will help take your style game to the next level.
